Abstract

Seed quality in terms of metabolite content was affected by level and stage of salinity treatment and growth regulators used. Salinity did not affect sugar content but decreased starch and protein content. Application of 20 ppm NAA was inhibitory to accumulation of sugars and starch but not protein under non-saline conditions while converse was true with regard to BAP (1 ppm) application. Both BAP and NAA improved seed proteins and starch content at higher salinities applied at pre-sowing stage but failed to show any ameliorative effect when saline irrigation was applied a little before plant's transition from vegetative to reproductive phase.
