Abstract

The uptake pattern of chromium (Cr) was observed in wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. UP 2003) seedlings at 3 and 24 h. Cr was superimposed on the nutrient solution as sodium dichromate at 0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mM. Chromium uptake increased as the Cr supply in the nutrient solution increased. The ratio of Cr absorbed to Cr supplied decreased with an increase in Cr supply from 0.01 to 1.0 mM at 3 and 24 h. The reduction in the ratio was significant at 3 h especially at 0.5 and 1.0 mM. Chromium uptake followed Michaelis-Menten kinetics at low Cr concentration, provides an evidence that the uptake of chromium as chromate is an active process.
