Abstract

Effect of normal and low light regimes on growth, biomass production and related changes in physiological parameters were analysed in seedlings of Adenanthera pavonina L. a fast growing multipurpose tree belonging to family Fabaceae. Seedlings grown under shade (40%) showed an increased growth and biomass production compared with seedlings grown under normal sunlight. Net assimilation rate (NAR) as well as leaf number and leaf area showed an increase in shade grown plants. Anatomically leaf thickness of sun and shade grown plants did not show significant difference. Total chlorophyll, chlorophyll-a and chlorophyll-b were high in shade grown plants. On the other hand Chl alb ratio and leaf area ratio were less in shade grown plants as compared to sun grown plants. Overall, the results indicate that A. pavonina seedlings are well adapted for low light intensities and can be recommended for homestead agroforestry practices in Kerala, where multilayer system of cultivation exist.
