Abstract

The relationship of mineral ash and total chlorophyll content of leaves with transpiration efficiency in groundnut genotypes was studied under three moisture regimes. The mineral ash and total chlorophyll content of leaves were strongly related with specific leaf area, a trait known to be related to water use efficiency of a genotype. Due to the simplicity in measurement, mineral ash content and chlorophyll content of leaves merit consideration, as screening tools in selection and breeding programmes for higher water use efficiency under limited water environments.
