Abstract

Fifteen rice genotypes were screened for seed germination, root morphology and early seedling growth under reduced water potentials and root penetration ability through simulated compacted soil layer system. Genotypes showed wide variation for germination, seedling and root growth under water stress and root penetration ability through simulated soil hardpans. Root growth dynamics and drought recovery ability of two rice genotypes differing significantly in the above root traits were also tested under water stress. The land races with deep and extensive root system showed drought avoidance and greater recovery ability after drought.
