Seeds of maize were soaked either with 15 mM of nitrates of different salts of with distilled water for 96 h priorio sowing. Ethanol-insoluble nitrogen content and nitrate reductase activity of leaves of maize seedlings were studied. Both the parameters of nitrogen metabolism were found superior in the nitrate treated seedling in comparison to distilled water soaked and control seedlings. However, Mg (NO3)2 treatment was found best this respect followed by Ca (NO3)2 and KNO3 treatments.
