Crude extract of a compound having growth promoting activity, obtained from Lantana camara, when used as foliar spray on rice cultivar IR-36, under field conditions, resulted in appreciable increase in growth of the plants. The date of flowering was considerably advanced and accompanied with increase in the length of the panicle and grain yield. The results were statistically significant. Chromatographic studies and spectroscopic analysis of the compound indicated that it may be a gibberellin like compound with a molecular weight of 410.
