Plantlet regeneration from decapitated embryonic axes of pigeonpea varieties

Abstract

The effect of different concentrations of indole acetic acid (IAA) and 6-benzyl aminopurine (BAP) were tested on decapitated embryonic axes for regeneration in the two varieties-UPAS-120 and Bahar of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp). Multiple shoots along with roots were observed in 0.5 ppm concentration of IAA in variety UPAS-120, while the embryonic axes in variety Bahar elongated into single shoots with roots at 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and 1 ppm IAA. Similar effect was also observed in a combination of 0.5 ppm IAA and 5 ppm BAP. Sixty percent of the regenerated plantlets of variety UPAS-120 grown at 0.1 ppm IAA+1 ppm BAP survived when transferred in plastic cups.
