Effect of salt stress on seedling growth and carbohydrate content in wheat

Abstract

The study revealed that shoot dry weight, starch and soluble sugar decreased with increasing salt concentrations in 20 days old wheat leaves. The reducing and non-reducing sugar also decreased with rise in salt concentration from 0.35 (control) to 16 dS m−1. The presoaking treatments of seeds with sodium benzoate (50 ppm), calcium chloride (100 ppm) and ascorbic acid (50 ppm) alleviated the adverse effect of salt stress in all the parameters studied.
