Glutathione and Lipid peroxidation levels were measured in transgenic lines of tobacco under oxidative stress due to NaCl (200 mM) and Cd (20 and 50 μM). Among the ten transgenic lines studied, germination was recorded only in GH 5 and GH 9 at par with control (pBI 121). There was no germination in any of the transgenic lines as well as in control in presence of Cd at 50 μm. The increase in lipid peroxidation (3–4 fold) in transgenic lines (GH 5 and GH 9) was less compared to a 5–6 fold increase in control (pBI 121) due to oxidative stress of NaCl (200 mM) and Cd 20 (μm). The decrease in Lipid peroxidation (MDA content) was attributed to the expression of genes, GS (glutamine synthetase) and HAL2 (sulfur metabolism) for increase in Glutathione-an indicator of oxidative stress resistance.
