Abstract

Siginificant variability in kinetics of nitrate uptake in terms of Vmax and Cmin was observed among 21 wheat genotypes, which were selected from an initial trial conducted for evaluating biomass producing capacity of 200 genotypes. The values of Vmax ranged between 4.7 to 12.0 μmol g−1 fresh weight of root h−1 in WJ-146 and Narmada respectively, while Cmin values ranged from 1.62 μM in HD-1593 to 5.5 μM in HD-1949. The genotypes E-574, E-340, Narmada, HD-1593 and Raj-3805 showed higher Vmax and lower Cmin values and these genotypes are also known to possess higher biomass producing capacity under condition of N deficiency.
