Root exudation by P-starved maize genotypes and its relationship with P uptake

Abstract

Availability of phosphorus (P) in soil and its acquisition by plant is affected by the release of high and low molecular weight root exudates. The relationship between root exudation and P-acquisition was, therefore, examined in two maize genotypes, Ganga-11 and Deccan-103, raised under P deficient condition. The genotypes showed differences in magnitude of root exudation and its sugar and amino acid content. Genotypic differences were also observed for P-uptake using 32P. Uptake efficiency of the genotype was positively related to exudation levels of roots. Compared to Deccan-103, Ganga-11 possessed traits that were better suited for P-deficient conditions.
