The seedlings of rice cv. Pusa 834 grown hydroponically in N-free Hoagland solution were treated with synthetic auxins (2,4-D, NAA and IBA) and inoculated with Azospirillum brasilense (Sp7). Nodule like structures were formed on roots but, root growth, lateral root development and shoot growth were arrested in auxin treatments. Nitrogenase activity was induced in all the Azospirillum inoculated treatments with enhanced activity in auxin treated systems.
