Abstract

In the present study, an attempt was made to examine the effect of various nickel levels (0.05, 0.5, 5.0 and 50.0 μM) on photosynthesis and chlorophyll content in rapeseed (Brassica campestris) var. Toria PT-303. The studies revealed that while low levels of nickel (up to 0.5 μM) enhanced the photosynthetic rates, high levels of 50 μM had the reverse effect. A decrease in the total chlorophyll content with increasing concentrations of Ni2+ was also observed in the rapeseed plants. The results suggests that nickel is an essential trace element for photosynthesis in rapeseed and the optimal level in nutrient solution is about 0.5 μM (0.03 ppm).
