For shootfly control, carbofuran 50 SP (5% a.i. w/w), carbofuran 3 G slurry seed treatment-endosulfan 0.05% and BHC 10% dusting were tried in normal and late sowing of kharif seasons of 1982, 1983 and 1984 on CSH-5 sorghum. Carbofuran SP was highly effective in reducing the shootfly damage and gave higher grain and fodder yields. The next promising was carbofuran granule slurry treatment. Endpsulfan and BHC did not give satisfactoryc ontrol. The increase in grain and fodder yields were also highest in carbofuran SP. However, incremental cost: benefit ratio was highest in carbofuran granule slurry treatment in both the sowings. Net profit was highest in corbofuran SP followed by carbofuran granule slurry treatment. Carbofuran granules have low inhalation toxicity and they are easily available in the market. Hence, under low to moderate shootfly infestation condition, carbofuran granule slurry treatment may be used for reducing the pest damage end increasing the yields.
