A rootzone liquid applicator developed at the Directorate of Rice Research, Hyderabad, India, was evaluated for applying carbofuran in rootzone of rice under puddled field conditions. Single rootzone application of carbofuran suspension (@ 0.75 kg a.i./ha) with the applicator was at par with single mudball placement or three granular broadcasts in controlling the whorl maggot and stem borer, and resulted in greater net profit (Rs. 2491/ha), and benefit: cost ratio (5.74) as compared to three granular broadcasts. Other advantages of rootzone applicator viz., low cost of manufacture, utility in random and line transplanted conditions, ease of operation, and feasibility for combined placement of compatible chemicals such as urea and carbofuran are emphasized.
