Performance of Brinjal Varieties Against Fruit and Shoot Borer, Leucinodes orbonalis Guen. and Wilt, Fusarium oxysporum in the North-Eastern Ghat Zone of Orissa

The brinjal fruit and shoot borer, Leucinodes orbonalis Guen. and fusarium wilt, Fusarium oxysporum have emerged recently as the most notorious pests of brinjal causing 30–50% and 30–100% damage respectively in the tribal dominated North-eastern Ghat Zone of Orissa. Studies were made to select suitable high yielding multiple resistant varieties of brinjal for cultivation in the zone. Results of 3 years (1991–1993) experiments indicated that both fruit borer and wilt incidence were lowest in BB 49 (12.5% and 2.1% respectively). Highest fruit yield was obtained from BB 49 (243 q/ha) followed by Utkal Tarini (233.8 q/ha). Considering yield, wilt and fruit borer incidence, market price of the produce cost of production and highest net return, these varieties can be recommended for this region as well as for the state of Orissa.
