Identification of Naturally Occurring Chilli Mosaic Virus in Northern Telangana Zone of Andhra Pradesh

Abstract

Survey conducted in the major chilli growing areas of Northern Telangana zone in Andhra Pradesh during Kharif 2000, 2001 and 2002 showed mosaic virus incidence of 18.5 per cent. Of the mosaic samples collected, only 34.7 per cent were sap transmitted to Capsicum annum cvs. Sindhur and California Wonder, which were categorized into five basic reacting types. Based on symptomatology, transmission, host range, physical properties, particle morphology and serological affinities, these groups were identified as five distinct viruses viz.. Tobacco mosaic virus, Pepper veinal mottle virus, Potato virus Y, Cucumber mosaic virus and Peanut bud necrosis virus.
