Abstract

Twenty accessions of Vigna radiata were screened under artificial infestation conditions to assess their reaction to Callosobruchus maculatus based on different parameters. All accessions exhibited significant differences in oviposition, percentage survival and mean developmental period. The accessions PLS 262 and PLM 89 revealed lesser per cent survival (both recorded 26.6%), prolonged developmental period (40.7and 36.6 days, respectively) and lesser index of suitability (0.0351 and 0.0389, respectively) in comparison to the check CO 6, which exhibited a per cent survival of 78.9 per cent, developmental period of 22.4 days and index of suitability of 0.0854. Hence, the accessions PLS 262 and PLM 89 can be effectively used as promising donors while evolving varieties resistant to bruchids.
