Abstract

Leaf extracts of Lippia javanica were tested against Spodoptera litura. The different organic solvent extracts of L. javanica leaves showed that the maximum antifeedant activity (76.6 per cent) in ethyl acetate extract followed by chloroform (54.3 per cent) and hexane (43.0 per cent) extracts at 5% concentration level. Ten fractions of L. javanica ethyl acetate extracts obtained by column chromatography with different combinations of hexane and ethyl acetate were used as a mobile phase. The fractions were screened for antifeedant activity at 1000 ppm concentration level. The tenth fraction exhibited maximum antifeedant activity (52.4%) at 500ppm with mortalities and deformities of larval, pupal and the adult. The preliminary phytochemical analysis of the plant also showed that the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, polyphenol, reducing sugar, diterpenoids and steroids in the extract.
