Survey was conducted during Kharif 2005–06 in selected villages of Allahabad district to study the etiology, distribution and incidence of mungbean leaf curl incited by Groundnut bud necrosis virus (GBNV). Information on disease incidence, thrip population in the field, on the weeds, preceding crops, surrounding crops, weed composition and date of sowing were recorded. Based on the survey information, experiments were conducted for three consecutive seasons of Kharif-2006, Summer-2007 and Kharif-2007. During Kharif-2006, disease was in the range of 8.9–40.7%, guard crop with sorghum (17.2%) and pearlmillet (17.4%) recorded significantly lowest mean disease and are at par, Thrips palmi population was lowest (14.6 per 5 terminals) During Summer 2007, guard crop with pearl millet recorded significantly lowest disease (16.2%), lowest mean thrip population (11.8 per 5 terminals) whereas during Kharif-2007, guard crop with maize recorded significantly lowest average disease (17.5%), mean thrip population was lowest in guard crop with maize (14.9 per 5 terminals). Guard crop with sorghum or pearlmillet was more effective in controlling leaf curl and it has more cumulative effective with close spacing 30x5 cm.
