Evaluation of Wild Rice Germplasm against Major Lepidopteran Pests

Abstract

Sixty-two wild rice germplasm accessions belonging to different species, viz., Oryza glaberrima, O. barthii, O. rufipogon, O. nivara, O. longistaminata, O. meridinalis, O. eichengiri, O. australiensis, O. punctata, O. latifolia, O. glumeatula and O. rhizomatis were evaluated under field conditions for two Kharif seasons against leaf folder and yellow stem borer at vegetative and panicle initiation crop stages. The accession, IRGC 105137 (O. punctata) showed consistently low damage of leaffolder at vegetative and panicle initiation stage. Significant correlation was observed between flag leaf width and per cent infested leaves at vegetative (r=0.63**) and panicle initiation (r=0.64**) stages. The dead heart (DH) damage was less than one per cent in ten accessions while the least white earhead (WEH) damage was recorded from 11 accessions. CR 100316 (O. nivara) consistently showed low stem borer damage during both the years of evaluation. Significant correlation was observed between plant height and per cent DH at vegetative and per cent WEH at panicle initiation stage.
