Evaluation of Indigenous Snap Types for Trapping Rodents in Paddy Fields of Godavari Delta in Andhra Pradesh
Abstract
The two indigenous snap traps, butta and tanjore kitty were evaluated for their relative efficacy in trapping rodents in rice fields. Butta trap was found superior in trapping lesser bandicoot. Bandicota bengalensis and field mouse, Mus booduga. The mean trap success was 15.5 with butta and 3.13 with tanjore kitty. The rat catches were more during the vegetative growth stages i.e., July, August and September in Kharif and December, January and February in Rabi. The trap catches were minimum during April and May due to low population during that period. Butta traps made of bamboo and palm leaves are the simple, easily available, economical and ecofriendly for trapping migrant rodent population in rice fields and this can be best integrated with other rodent management practices.
