An experiment was conducted to find out effective chemical control of Parthenium hysterophorus near Golkonda fort on the bank of Musi river, in Hyderabad. Herbicides 2, 4 D, MSMA, paraquat, terbutryn and AMS were applied alone and/or in combination. The combined application of herbicides was done as tank mixed or separately after an interval of 17 days. The spraying was done at the flowering stage of Parthenium. Observations on the mortality/desiccation of weed were taken after 17, 30 and 80 days of spraying.
Effective control of Parthenium was obtained with MSMA followed by 2, 4-D, MSMA + 2, 4-D; MSMA + paraquat and 2, 4-D + paraquat. AMS which gave severe desiccation initially was not found effective to kill the plants, and later on the regeneration occured. Paraquat alone also did not give satisfactory control.
