Some Aspects of Jackal Damage in Sugarcane

Observations on jackal damage were made on 10–11 months old sugarcane (cv: Co. 419) crop. The symptoms of damage are described and illustrated. More than half the canes examined were damaged at a single internode only. Increase in the number of internodes damaged per cane was apparently related to the total internodes per cane. The positions of fifth to seventh internode above ground were more frequently involved in single and/or multiple internode damage in a cane. The scope of these observations for use in control measures is indicated.
