Abstract

Even though personality traits are highlighted in numerous researches only few studies attempted to conclude findings regarding personality traits of mentally disordered persons, as focus has been mainly given to the physiological aspects of patients. This study aimed to describe the personality profiles viz Extraversion, Neuroticism and Psychoticism associated with male neurotic patients and to compare it with the normal male population. The study was a cross-sectional study consisted of 30 male patients with neurotic disorders attending a psychiatric outpatient clinic and 30 males (control group) from the general population chosen to match the patient samples in respect of factors like age, gender and socioeconomic level from Bangalore, Karnataka between the age group of 20 to 30 years. Participants were selected using Purposive sampling method. Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Revised-Short Form (EPQR-S) and Personal Data Sheet were administered to them. Descriptive statistical analysis was used with student's t test to find the significance of data. The control group scored high on extraversion domain than neurotic male patients. There was significant difference between the neurotic male patients and the control group with regard to neuroticism personality trait. No significant difference is existed between both groups with regard to their psychoticism (tough mindedness). This difference in neuroticism personality trait is to be facilitated while implementing new treatments and rehabilitations related to neurotic patients.
