Anxiety: An Independent Potential Risk Factor for Suicidal Ideation among College Students

Abstract

The opportunity to pursue a college education, enter adulthood with its added responsibilities and freedoms and participation in student life can be an exciting time. However, college students may experience a significant degree of stress as the result of these same developmental opportunities. Previous research has shown that college students report a higher rate of suicidal ideation than non-college students; therefore, it is essential to understand about suicide when working with college students. This study aims to determine anxiety as an independent ability to predict suicidality among college students. The surveying approach under the descriptive method is adopted in the current investigation.200 undergraduate students participated the study and completed Adult Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (ASIQ) and State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Results revealed that 20(10%) participants had suicidal ideation within the past one month. The study also revealed both state trait anxiety has significant relationship with suicidal ideation. The study emphasizes that anxiety as a trait could be an independent contribution to suicidality.
