The cardinal object of the present study was to investigate the effect of relaxation training (JPMR and Positive Imagery) on the psychopathological functions namely Anxiety and Depression.
A pre-post study was performed in population of patients of Chronic non-malignant pain. These were namely under Fibromyalgia, Chronic headache and Somatic symptom disorder. The study consisted of a sample of 60 adult patients (30 control and 30 experimental) selected by a proper inclusion and exclusion criteria. Then the groups were divided by random sampling. After the intervention phase of four weeks, reassessment was done on the patients. The tool used was Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale by Snaith & Zigmond.
The results showed significant differences for the psychopathological functions in the experimental group. This shows how relaxation can help in improving the patient's mental health as it widely improved the anxiety and depression.
Anxiety is found to be more prevalent than depression among chronic pain patients although there is significant association between pain with anxiety and depression among these patients.
