Abstract

Studies with regard to blood indices and biochemical variables were made upon 45 ascitic and 30 apparently healthy birds procured from the fifteen ascites affected farms in Haryana during winter season. The affected birds exhibited a significant rise in haemoglobin (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV) and total erythrocyte count (TEC) while the erythrocyte indices viz. mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCR) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) did not vary significantly from that of the controls. There was a significant fall in serum total proteins, albumin, albumin globulin ratio (A:G), calcium and sodium. The elevation of serum alanine aminotransferase, asparate aminotransferase, alkaline phofphates and phosphorus was reported in the ascitic birds. The results indicated haemoconcentration alongwith large fluctuations in serum enzyme and mineral levels in ascitic birds.
