Abstract

A survey study for aflatoxin B1 contents in different poultry feed ingredients as well as compounded poultry feeds was conducted in tarai region of U.P. Feed samples were collected from feed manufacturers, middlemen and poultry farmers. Among different feed ingredients, maize was found to be most contaminated with an average value of as high as 0.948±0.398 ppm AFB., followed by wheat (0.285±0.170 ppm) and groundnut cake (0.225±0.071 ppm). The rice bran and soybean meal were least contaminated. Amongst the compounded poultry feeds starter feed was found to be most contaminated (0.186±0.91 ppm) whereas, grower feed had a little lower value (0.l80±0.071 ppm) and the layer feed showed the lowest contamination (0.100±0.050 ppm). All the feed ingredients and compounded feeds under study showed almost equal AFB, infestation with farmers and middlemen, however, the manufacturers' samples had lower values of this toxin.
