Effect of probiotics on growth performance of meat type Japanese quail

Quail chicks (n = 240) were utiliudto observe the effect of probiotics both of bacterial and fungal origin and their combination in standard quail ratio on growth performance of meat type Japanese quail. Commercial probiotic of bacterial origin (sporlac) and fungal origin (Yea-Sacc 1026) were supplemented at the rate of 18 and 100 g per 100 kg/feed, respectively and also in combination at the same dose rate. Body weight gain increased significantly (P < 0.05) by probiotic either singly or in combination. No significant effect on feed consumption was noted however, the supplimented group utilized feed more efficiently. Considering the economic aspect, supplementation of probiotic of bacterial origin to promote growth is advocated.
