Performance of Japanese quail under cage and deep litter system of rearing in Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Abstract

In the hot and humid climate of Andaman and Nicobar islands the performance of Japanese quail under cage and deep litter system was evaluated. The study revealed that cage reared birds excelled over deep litter-reared birds in early laying of eggs, early reaching the age at 50 percent egg production, higher (P<0.05) egg production (Hen day egg production), and significantly (P<0.05) higher hatchability percent (TES). The egg weight, fertility percent and hatchability percent on (FES) were numerically higher in cage than deep litter reared birds but the differences were not significant. It was concluded that in Andaman and Nicobar it would be better to rear quails in cages than deep litter system.
