Pathogenicity of ten different smooth strains of Salmonella Gallinarum isolated from commercial poultry farms in and around Ludhiana (Punjab) was compared in 1 week old chicks. The mortality pattern and symptoms were recorded over a period of 17 days post-infection. Different isolates varied in causing mortality in the chicks that ranged upto 70 per cent in the most virulent isolate. The in vitro antibacterial sensitivity test on 20 isolates of S. Gallinarum revealed that all the strains were sensitive to chloramphenicol, while 19, 17, 14, 13, 12, 12 and 9 strains were sensitive to ampicillin, streptomycin, tetracycline, nitrofurantoin, cephalexin, neomycin and enrofloxacin, respectively. All were resistant to penicillin-G.
