Growth performance of two breeds viz - CSML and RIR, developed at Central Avian Research Institute were studied both under the extensive and intensive system of poultry keeping. The body weight of CSML at 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks were found to be 164±160, 398±6.65, 686±10.65 and 1035±19.56g in intensive system and 171±1.40, 312±4.46, 402±13.24640±22.04g, respectively in extensive system (backyard) of rearing. The body weight in case of RIR at 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks of age under intensive system of rearing were 96±0.98, 311±2.01, 346±3.73 and 442±5.30g, respectively corresponding body weight of 105±0.98, 162. ±1.98, 225±6.86 and 327±11.02g in extensive system of rearing at the farmers’ house in adopted villages. At 20 weeks of age the body weight of extensive reared birds was higher than the intensive birds. The mortality percent (0–8 weeks) was higher in extensive system than the intensive system of rearing mainly due to predators. However, the profit margin in extensive farming is comparatively more than the intensive farming is comparatively more than the intensive farming both the high yielding birds.
