Abstract

A study conducted in Garhwal Himalayas with sample size of 100 backyard poultry farmers showed that most farmers belong to old age category, having medium family size, low annual income and high social participation. Among the constraints perceived non- availability of day old chicks/lack of suitable germplasm, Infrastructure facility, high price rate of day old chick, lack of technical know-how, non-availability of vaccine and medicines, Government policy and credit facility of farmers were ranked as most important. The total improvement of this sector needs proper planning, creation of adequate infrastructure and monetary support. To make backyard poultry rearing a profitable venture the farmers should be adequately trained in scientific poultry rearing.
