Effect of deltamethrin on isolated chicken hepatocytes

Abstract

Deltamethrin, a synthetic pyrithroid is widely used as pesticide in agriculture and ecto-parasiticide in poultry farms. In order to evaluate its hepato-toxicity and to study the effect in vivo LD50 of deltamethrin on isolated chicken hepatocytes, the hepatocytes (106 cells/ml) were incubated with deltamethrin @ 12 (LD25)and 24 (LD50)μg/ml for 1 hour. The normal viability of heptocytes (91.00±4.69%) was reduced to 78.26±6.32% and 56.54T±4.51%, respectively. At LD50, the activity of liver specific enzyme such as ALAT was significantly increased (P<0.001) by 115.0% and ALP was significantly reduced (p<0.05) by 42.22% as compared to non-treated control. On the other hand, the activities of ASAT and LDH were increased non-significantly in the treatment groups in a dose dependent manner. The increased levels of ALAT, ASAT and LDH indicate that deltamethrin at in vivo LD50 caused hepatocyte damage.
