Abstract

An experiment was conducted to study the aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) producing potential of two different strains viz. Aspergillus parasiticus MTCC 411 and Aspergillus parasiticus NRRL 2999. Using liquid medium, consisting of 2% yeast extract and 15% sucrose, Aspergillus parasiticus MTCC 411 strain produced 100 mg and Aspergillus parasiticus NRRL 2999 strain produced 110 mg AFB1 per litre of medium. Under dark condition Aspergillus parasiticus MTCC 411 produced higher amount of AFBas compared to light condition. Higher yield of AFB1 was reported on yeast extract-sucrose medium as compared to synthetic low salts medium. However, mycelial growth had no correlation with AFB1 yield. It is thus, concluded that Aspergillus parasiticus MTCC 411 strain has low aflatoxigenic potential than Aspergillus parasiticus NRRL 2999 strain and the AFB1 yield is more under dark conditions as compared to light conditions since light is deleterious to the aflatoxin formation.
