Protein profile of EDS-76 virus isolates of chicken and Japanese quails

Abstract

Purified EDS-76 Virus isolates of chicken (CEDSV) and quail origin (QEDSV) along with the reference strain of chicken EDS-76 virus (BC-14) were subjected to SDS-PAGE, which revealed 9 similar polypeptides each for CEDSV and QEDSV with molecular weight ranging from 22 kd to 126.8 kd, where as BC-14 strain of EDS-76 revealed 12 polypeptides with the molecular weight ranging from 12 kd to 126.0 kd. In western blotting analysis, the protein fraction 2 known as penton fiber protein having the molecular weight of 67.5 kd and protein fraction 3 known as penton base protein having the molecular weight of 65.2 kd were found to be immunogenic. The penton fiber and penton base proteins reacted with homologous as well as heterologous sera having antibodies against CEDSV and QEDSV, respectively during immunoblot analysis. Therefore, it is concluded that EDS-76 virus isolates of chicken and quail origin carry common and cross protective antigens on its surface. Therefore, the vaccine available against chicken EDS-76 virus may be useful against EDS-76 virus infection in Japanese quails.
