Abstract

During a comprehensive study on the biochemical and cytochemical observations on the gut endocrine cells of broiler chicken, a deviation in caecal morphogenesis was noted. A common caecal duct of 3.2 cm length and 5 mm diameter was seen to attach to the ileo-colic junction of the gut at one end and to the base of a paired caeca at the other end. The right lateral caecum measured 6.20cm by length and 11 mm by diameter. The left lateral caecum measured a length of 4.8cm and a diameter of 4.5 cm. Both the caeca were sacculated and attached to the common mesentery. The mesentery revealed extensive vascular bed. The caecal duct was studded with diffuse lymphatic tissue revealing the typical lympho-glandular complex Histomorphologically the caecal duct was akin to the ileum.
