Abstract

Modern food is known to be deficient in essential omega-3 fatty acids (n-3 FA) and is a major cause of increase in severity and incidences of several degenerative diseases. Therefore enriching various foods including, chicken meat and egg with n-3 FA has been an active area of research. Although fish oil or high levels of linseed up to 17% has been used to enrich chicken meat, the change in organoleptic property and the instability of n-3 FA in chicken meat, cost of production, have been the major challenges. Linseed has several anti nutritional factors that affect feed conversion ratio (FCR) and thereby cost of production. Therefore we studied the effect of supplementation of enriched feed mix (EFM) made up of linseed deoiled cake and linseed oil (LO) and only LO to finisher feed, on the live performance, cost of production and fatty acid composition of chicken meat. It was observed that adding EFM into finisher diets of commercial broiler VENCOBB 400 can economically enrich the chicken meat with incorporation of good amounts of n-3 FA.
