Abstract

A study was conducted to assess the current status of coccidiosis in commercial broiler and broiler breeder farms in Bangalore district. A study of twenty one farms which included one hundred and eleven sheds showed 7l.43% in the farms screened and 42.34% of sheds examined were positive for oocysts of coccidia. The severity of infection was found to be highest at age group of 4–6 weeks, but number of cases was more between 6 to 8 weeks based on both litter oocyst density and oocysts per gram of faeces. Based on necropsy, caecal coccidiosis was found to be the most predominant form. The speciation based on morphology and micrometry revealed five different species, viz., Eimeria tenella, Eimeria necatrix, Eimeria maxima, Eimeria acervulina and Eimeria mitis.
