The study was performed to isolate and characterized the lytic phage against P. multocida from the farm yard resource of cattle, buffalo and poultry. Out of 50 samples of waste water collected from different farm of cattle, buffalo and poultry, 5 were found positive for lytic phage. The isolated phages were characterized on the basis of plaque morphology, phage titre, phage: bacteria ratio of plaque and 1:100 (phage: bacteria ratio). This preliminary study will be useful to search potential candidate plaque for treatment and control of bacterial diseases like fowl cholera mainly which are caused by multiple serotype or serogroup. The phage lysate induced a protective response against fowl cholera after immunization with a very low dose through both s.c and intranasal routes. The 100% bird protective dose was found to be as low as 50 μl.
