Electron microscopic observations on the granulocytes of kadaknath fowl

Abstract

The present study was conducted on the blood cells of ten apparently healthy adult Kadaknath fowls. Ultrastructurally, the heterophils showed small and large cytoplasmic processes with bilobed nucleus. The nuclear lobes contained more euchromatin than heterochromatin material. The cytoplasm was laden with membrane bound cytoplasmic granules, varied greatly in shape, size and density. The eosinophils showed large and small cytoplasmic processes. The nucleus was usually bilobed with distinct nuclear membrane having nuclear pores. The nuclear lobes had almost equal amount of heterochromatin and euchromatin. The cytoplasmic granules were distributed throughout the cytoplasm and varied greatly in shape and size. The basophils were distorted and showed large and small cytoplasmic processes. The nucleus was eccentrically placed showed indentation generally. The heterochromatin was distributed towards the peripheral area as well as centrally in the form of small and large patches in the euchromatin. The cytoplasmic granules were generally electron dense and oval or elongated in shape. In present study the granulocytes of kadaknath fowl revealed presence of membrane bound granules of various shape, size and electron density. There was bilobed nucleus in eosinphils and hetrophils while the nucleus of basophil was nonlobed with indentation.
