The study was conducted at Instructional Livestock Farm, Bihar Veterinary College, Patna, to evaluate the effect of different dietary supplementation like sugar beet meal, neem leaf meal, linseed meal and coriander seed meal on total cholesterol in serum and muscle (liver, thigh muscle and breast muscle), triglyceride, HDL, LDL, VLDL, glucose and protein in serum, haemoglobin and PCV in blood. The experiment was conducted for a period of 42 days on 150 male birds (Vanaraja strain). All day-old chicks were individually weighed and distributed into five groups having thirty birds in each. Each group was further sub-divided into three replicates having 10 birds in each. Group T1 served as control and rest groups T2, T3, T4 and T5 as treatment groups. Birds in T1 group were fed basal ration only, however, T2, T3, T4 and T5 groups were fed basal ration mixed with 2.5 percent sugar beet meal, neem leaf meal, linseed meal and coriander seed meal, respectively. The different dietary supplementation in feed lower the total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL and VLDL. In case of HDL, it slightly decreased in linseed fed group but increased in other treatment groups. Supplementations also lowers the total cholesterol level in liver, thigh muscle and breast muscle but no definite trend was shown by different treatment group. There was no significant difference in case of glucose and protein level in serum. However numerically low value of glucose in T2 and T5 group than control indicated the glucose lowering property of sugar beet and coriander. There was numerically higher value of protein level in serum from T5 group than control. Role of herbs/spices is helpful to increase haemoglobin and PCV except slightly decrease in neem leaf fed group. So, we conclude that feeding of above herbs/spices in broiler ration helpful in lowering cholesterol level in serum and production of low cholesterol meat.
