Effect of dietary neem (Azadirachta indica) and kadi (Murraya koenigii) leaf powder on haematological and serum biochemical profile of broiler chicken

Abstract

A study was conducted for a period of 6 weeks to assess the effect of dietary neem and kadi leaf powder supplementation on blood hamato-biochemical parameters in broiler chicken. In the study, day old broiler chicks (n=180) were randomly distributed in completely randomized design into 6 treatment groups each with 3 replicates of 10 broiler chicken. The broiler chicken of treatment groups T1, T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6 were provided feed containing 0%, 0.2% neem, 0.2% kadi, 0.1% kadi plus 0.3% neem, 0.3% kadi plus 0.1% neem and 0.2% kadi plus 0.2% neem leaf powder, respectively. At the end of experiment blood samples were collected for study of serum-biochemical parameters viz., serum glucose, serum cholesterol, serum total protein, serum albumin, globulin along with albumin-globulin ratio and serum SGOT and serum SGPT, and hematological parameters viz., haemoglobin, PCV, TEC and TLC. The results indicated significantly (P<0.05) decreased serum glucose, cholesterol, SGOT and SGPT level in neem and kadi leaf powder supplemented groups, whereas, serum protein level improved significantly (P<0.05). Albumin, globulin and A/G ratio did not differ significantly (P>0.05). Dietary herbs has significant effect (P<0.05) on haemoglobin, packed cell volume and total erythrocyte count of broiler chicken. It was concluded that neem leaf powder @0.2% and kadi leaf powder @ 0.2% supplementation improved hematological and serum bio-chemical profile of broiler chicken.
