Demand of poultry meat and egg in India is growing day by day due to its growing human population. Due to its wholesomeness in respect of nearly all nutrients, it is regarded as a healthy diet. But now a day’s demand of lean meat and low cholesterol egg is increasing among health conscious group of people. Indian indigenous breed of chicken “Kadaknath” is the solution to the need of health conscious consumers. Because of fibromelanosis, many body parts of this breed have accumulated extra quantity of melanin ultimately resulting into high protein and low fat meat. Its meat has been traditionally used by tribal in treating some chronic illness. Because of its multiple health benefits and increasing consumer demand, there is a need to do a holistic study on the meat and egg of Kadaknath breed of chicken. Keeping the above points in view we have reviewed the different aspect of Kadaknath chicken i.e. breed specification, geographic distribution, housing and feeding management, genetics, productive and reproductive performance, nutritional qualities, economics, meat and egg quality.
