This paper focuses on the prospects and challenges of poverty alleviation strategies in Nigeria. It studies various aspects and dimensions of poverty as well as the strategies adopted in the past to alleviate poverty. It found that the strategies have failed to achieve the intended goal; the reasons identified include non-inclusion of the beneficiaries during strategies formulation and corruption in government. The paper recommends that government should intensify the war against corruption and involve the beneficiaries in formulation of its programmes
