Sub-surface Structure and Oil and Gas Migration in the Qamar Gulf, Eastern Yemen Based on Gravity Anomalies

Abstract

Preliminary gravity results for Qamar Gulf in the eastern part of Yemen. No geophysical studies were available for this important area, regional and residual gravity components were obtained by a third-order polynomial surface fitting to the Bouguer anomaly. The residual anomalies feature, gravity low between wells 16/E and 16/G in the center of the area (−8 mGal), it is elliptical in shape, attributed to graben fault in the sedimentary rocks. And residual gravity high between wells 16/E and Al-Fatk, and between wells Al-Fatk and Al-Faydami, which are elliptical in shape with W-E trend, which are due to faulted blocks between these wells in the sedimentary rocks. Regional gravity low shows an hour-glass pattern with NE-SW trend, in the southwest of the region, which perhaps is due to graben faults in the sedimentary rocks. The structures of the area are related to the Red Sea and Aden Gulf tectonics. These structures divide the area into several major blocks that great important is sealing the oil traps. We conclude that the area is promising prospect in terms of oil and gas prospecting.
