The paper gives a broad overview of the applications of solar cell based power sources in systems of military interest. The importance of thin film based flexible solar modules is emphasized, particularly for power packs for running the gadgets of the soldier and several other systems. A brief description of different types of materials employed in thin film solar cells and their salient features has been included along with the status regarding the production of these devices. Recent and potential developments in utilizing the solar based power in defence systems like UAVs, drones, aerostats, airplanes, vehicles etc are also described.
