In the present communication response surface methodology (RSM) was applied on BG11+ medium to optimize the biomass, carbohydrate and lipid in Scenedesmus quadricauda. In first set of experiments; effect of various macronutrients of BG11+ medium were defined towards biomass, carbohydrate and lipid production using the factorial design. The NaNO3, K2HPO4, MgSO4·7H2O and pH were resulted as the important factors affecting the optimal growth, carbohydrate and lipid production of S. quadricauda. In second set of experiment, the levels of NaNO3, K2HPO4, MgSO4·7H2O and pH in growth medium was optimized using the RSM whilst other parameter were kept constant as in original BG11+ medium. The biomass, carbohydrate and lipid content in original BG11+ medium were 1.10 gL−1, 161 μg mL−1 and 28% (w/w) respectively whilst in RSM optimized medium biomass, carbohydrate and lipid contents were 1.94 gL−1, 450 μg mL−1 and 48%(w/w) respectively.
